Italy  Spain   Sweden   Denmark  Greece  England  Germany  Scotland  France Turkey  Czech Rep

Local derbies are something special, and it is important for punters to be aware of these matches, since they are often very tight matches, where criteria like form and league standings have no real influence. All that matters is NOT to lose the derby. Local derbies tend to end with a draw, because the fear of losing the game is much higher than the will to win.

Italy            [To the top]

Rome vs Lazio:
These teams make use of the same arena (Olympic Stadium in Rome), a very important game for both parts. This is Italy's most probable draw !

Torino - Juventus
Share the same home arena. This game does not end with a draw very often, but Torino wins almost as many games as Juve.

Inter Milan - AC Milan
Share the same arena. Rather difficult to predict, as these teams don't seem to go for the draw.

Genoa - Sampdoria
Share the same arena. Often ends with a draw. Genoa (when in the same division) provide hard opposition for Samp, and often stand a good chance against their more known opponents.

Spain           [To the top]

Ath Madrid - Real Madrid
Do not share stadiums. Rarely ends with a draw. Often a very uncertain game to predict. This is THE derby in Madrid, although Rayo Vallecano is also a Madrid-based team.

Espanyol - Barcelona
Do not share stadiums. Barca seems to win more of the derbies, but has also got a better team. Rarely a draw.

Betis - Seville
Share the same arena. Not too often in the same division, but Betis has got the small edge. A somewhat dull game, often ends with a draw.

Gijon - Oviedo
These teams have their own grounds, but rarely play derbies on their grounds due to capacity problems. Normally they play derbies on a neutral ground with large capacity. Gijon and Oviedo are neighbour towns. Often few goals and a draw..

Sweden           [To the top]

Frolunda - Gais
Share ground. Very unpredictable, as most Swedish games, but this is more like bingo than soccer...

GAIS - IFK Gothenburg
Share ground. GAIS normally play in the division below IFK, but can very well beat their more known opponent if they play in the same division.

AIK, Hammarby, Djurgarden
All the games between these 3 are very difficult to predict. All teams from Stockholm. ALL games between these sides played at Råsunda, meaning AIK effectively got home games, but it's a neutral venue when Hammarby and Djurgarden meet.

Malmo - Helsingborg
Lots of prestige here between two teams on the sout-west Swedish coast..

Orebro - Degerfors
Tough game to predict. Not a local derby strictly by definiton, perhaps, but nevertheless a very unpredictable game to predict.

Denmark           [To the top]

Lyngby, Brondby, FC Copenhagen
Posesses their own grounds, but there a virtually no home advantage when these 3 play each other. Stay away is the best bet.

Silkeborg - Ikast
No matter who's got home advantage, no matter the form, no matter the league standings, place your bets on the away team if you have to bet on this local derby.

Greece           [To the top]

AEK, Panathinaikos, Olympiakos
All these teams are located in Attica and they are the best teams in Greece

Athinaikos - Ethnikos Asteras
Classic local derby.

PAOK, Aris, Iraklis
All these teams are located in Salonica. Especially PAOK - Aris is a great, great derby.

Panahaiki - Panilakos
Also a local derby.

England           [To the top]

Wimbledon - Crystal Palace
Share the same ground. Stay away.

Stoke - Port Vale
"The forgotten derby". Do not share ground. Often very good odds presented on the away team. League standings and team form has no influence here. The prototype of a local derby.

Norwich - Ipswich
Although there is some geographical distance between these teams, it's widely regarded as the "Anglian Derby". Normally Norwich win at home, and lose away. The same goes for Ipswich, win at home, lose away.

WBA - Wolves
This is probably one of the toughest derbies in England. Highly charged atmosphere, supporters with real "hate", close matches. Matches usually drawn or settled by the odd goal.

Sheff Utd - Sheff Wed
Special game in Sheffield, which is ofcourse very difficult to predict. Got their own grounds.

Liverpool, Everton, Tranmere
Liverpool vs Everton is ofcourse the big Merseyside derby. Very evenly sided affair, but Liverpool have a slight edge over the years. Not too many draws, very often a winner. Tranmere play in a lower division, but will provide stiff competition if they meet Liverpool or Everton.

Man Utd - Man City
Very special and hot-headed derby.. Utd the best team in recent years, but they have not played eachother for several years now due to different divisions.

Bristol C - Bristol R
Thight game on the south coast. These teams normally play in the lower leagues

Sunderland, Middlesboro, Newcastle
The North-East derbies are usually thight, but the home advantage seems to pay off anyway. Sunderland are always very strong at home.

Aston Villa - Birmingham
Often a tight game. Usually play in different divisions. Draw is not far off.

Arsenal, Tottenham
The battle of North-London. Highbury and White Hart Lane are just a few houndred meters apart, but fierce rivalry here. Slight home advantage, but really a very open game. Stay away.

West Ham, Chelsea, Charlton
London-based teams. Open affairs, no particular home advantage here.

Germany           [To the top]

1860 Munich - Bayern Munich
Share the Olympic Stadium in Munchen. Bayern the best team, even though 1860 have become a much improved team over the latter years.

St.Pauli - Hamburg
Home advantage means nothing in this Hamburg-derby. Got their own grounds.

Uerdingen - Gladbach
Neighbour cities. Special feelings in this game after the 1990 scandal, where these teams played a dull 0-0 draw which saved them both from the drop !

FC Cologne - Leverkusen
Usually a draw when Cologne plays at home. When Leverkusen plays at home, it's normally a Leverkusen victory.

Schalke - Dortmund
Fiercly contested derby in the Ruhr district. A draw is always a good bet.

Scotland           [To the top]

Rangers- Celtic
This game has more to it than just soccer. It's about religion (catholics and protestants), and a very tight encounter indeed. Separate grounds. Rangers the best team overall, Celtic best in recent years.

Hearts - Hibernian
Edinburgh local derby, but the teams have got their own grounds. Pick the draw, and forget the rest.

Dundee FC - Dundee Utd
The Dundee-derby does not end wth a draw as often as you could expect.

France           [To the top]

Lyon - St.Etienne
Own homegrounds, not in the same town, but nevertheless rated as a local derby. Very difficult to predict.

Nice, Marseilles, Cannes
South coast matches with special feelings and a lot on stake. Pay attention here..

Turkey           [To the top]

Fenerbache - Galatasaray
The most passionate and hostile encounter in Turkey and maybe in all Europe. Don't share same ground. Fenerbahce is a little better in these matches , specially when playing as hosts. An interesting point is that the team in low form all the season usually win this one.

Galatasaray - Besiktas
Don't share same ground. Galatasaray usually wins at home and a draw is very possible when they visit Besiktas.

Besiktas - Fenerbache
Don't share same ground. This is the most difficult derby in Turkey to predict.

Trabzonspor, Rizespor, Samsunspor
These are black sea teams and their encounters are very entertaining to watch. Favouring the host team is the best solution and bear in mind that Trabzonspor is the better side.

Ankaragucu - Genclerbirigli
These teams are from Turkey's capital Ankara. It isn't like a derby because these teams support each other against Istanbul teams. Genclerbirligi is better in last years but Ankaragucu wins as many matches as their opponents.

Goztepe - Karsiyaka
Very passionate derby in Izmir. Their meetings are "games of the year" in the Aegean part of Turkey and no bet is the best form of winning money.

Czech Rep           [To the top]

Jablonec - Liberec
Teams from the north and with big rivalry. Very often the home team is the winner

Brno - Drnovice
Drnovice is village near Brno. Brno has biggest home crowd in Czech and many fans often travel to away games, especially to Drnovice. Home stadium is big advantage in this case, despite Brno's large travelling support.

Sparta, Bohemians, Slavia, Zizkov
All teams are from Prague. The most successful from these teams is Sparta, then Slavia, Zizkov and Bohemians. The oldest derby is Slavia vs. Sparta, which is the most famous in Czech Republic and often finish with draw.
